Benefits of a Sleep Pillow for Babies

Years ago, new mothers leaving the hospital were told to place infants on their backs in order to prevent suffocation. Unfortunately, infants who sleep predominantly on their backs end up with a flattened shape to the back of their heads. Proper head shape is just one of the many benefits of a sleep pillow for babies. Mothers who try sleep pillows will never want to go back to life without one.
Baby wedges
The baby wedge is a common variety of infant sleep pillow. It features a firm foam base and dense foam blocks to keep the baby in place during sleep. The material is effective for prevention of a flattened head yet soft enough to provide comfortable cushioning.
Safety concerns
Using a baby pillow can prevent a baby from rolling over onto his or her stomach and suffocating in the crib sheets. It can also prevent the infant from rolling into hard crib bars or out of a bed.
Additional uses
Certain medical conditions are addressed through the use of a baby pillow too. Acid reflux and colic are common in babies and are often exacerbated when the infant lies flat on his or her back. The slight elevation provided by most baby pillows can relieve this. Babies who sleep on elevated pillows also tend to wake less, which means more sleep for mom!
The days of placing babies flat on their backs to sleep are over. Using a baby pillow lets moms look forward to more restful nights sleep with a more comfortable child.
