Foam vs. Spring Crib Mattresses

There are many similarities and differences in comparing foam vs. spring crib mattresses, along with benefits and drawbacks. Review the following information before deciding which mattress is best for your baby.

Foam mattresses

Foam mattresses are typically cheaper than spring mattresses. Most have a thin, plastic-like cover which is easy to clean and does not let stains or liquids penetrate the padding. Once the cover gets a tear, liquids can enter the inner padding, and they are impossible to wash. After a lot of usage, they tend to lose their shape and lack much resale value, even at garage sales. Another minor drawback is the sound from the plastic covering whenever the baby moves in his/her crib. This is not a big problem unless your child sleeps in your room or with siblings. If you live in a hot climate, make sure to cover the mattress with a sheet and blanket to absorb sweat and prevent your child from over-heating at night.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses are a bit more expensive but a lot more durable, and most come with some kind of guarantee. All are surface-washable and for serious stains, they ear easily cleaned with a steam cleaner. These mattresses offer years of use and the potential for higher resale after your child has grown. The fabric is breathable and creates a more comfortable sleeping environment.

All mattresses have their upsides and downsides; ultimately, only you can decide which one is right for you and your family.
