How to Decorate a Room for a Newborn

Learn how to decorate a room for a newborn, as it is one of the most enjoyable experiences of a pregnancy to fix up a room for your baby. Nesting is hard-wired for almost all expectant parents, and decorating your baby's room aids in your transition to the next phase of your family's life.

  1. First: Baby-proofing your room

Before you even start to think about a color palette or furniture, it is important to review current safety standards. Cover any outlets in the room and tightly secure blind cords on windows. Keeping a newborn's room clean is also important, so consider changing out the old carpet and installing tile or laminate that is easier and quieter to clean.

  2. Second: Pick out a color scheme and theme

Now, move on to your theme and color palette, since you want all the painting finished before the baby arrives. The smell of paint is not something you want lingering in the room. Pastels are soothing, especially light green and blue, so choose one of these colors for a relaxing atmosphere. Decorate your ceiling, since babies spend a lot of time initially on their backs. Ceiling decorations provide visual interest and help your baby's vision develop more rapidly.

  3. Third: Collect your furniture

Minimally, your newborn's room needs a crib, changing table, some type of clothes storage, hamper and a bassinet. A rocking chair or glider is also highly recommended. It is a precious moment when you are able to soothe your baby when he or she is upset or sleepy as you cuddle in the rocking chair.
