The Dangers of Drop Side Cribs

When purchasing a crib for your unborn child, it is extremely important that you understand the dangers of drop side cribs. To begin, the United States Consumer Product Safety Council outlawed their manufacture in 2010. Historically, drop side cribs were a popular choice because they offered convenience for the parent.
The dangers of drop side cribs
Drop side cribs pose a very serious threat to your infant. Poor hardware in drop side cribs can create a dangerous situation for your baby. The gap between the mattress and the side rail can cause your child to get stuck. Although drop-side cribs are more convenient for getting your baby in and out, especially if you have back problems or other physical infirmities, the threat to the safety to your child is too great to ignore.
Dealing with your drop side crib
If you have a drop side crib in use in your home, discontinue using it immediately. Instead, your infant should sleep in an alternate location such as a pack-and-play until you can purchase a fixed-wall crib. Although the total number of infant deaths is relatively small, the risk is far too great to take with even one child. Do not let manufacturers convince you to continue use of your drop side crib, even if they claim that cribs not affected by the recall are still safe to use if you check the hardware regularly. However, there is a serious reason why these cribs are no longer on the market. Do not let your little loved one end up just another statistic.
